Questions & Answers

Have questions about what to expect at the VisualStory workshop?

What’s the difference between 1Day and 2Day VisualStory?
While both courses cover similar material, 1Day acts more like a summary of principles, while 2Day allows you to go deep and execute those principles via exercises and activities.
Do I need a laptop?
Nope! We’ll build up your skills by coming up with analog stories and improve visual thinking by manually sketching.
If I’m not bringing my laptop, what should I bring with me?
Virtually nothing! All you need to “bring” with you is an idea for a presentation. That can be one you’re working on right now, one you have to give in the future, or one you gave in the past (and want to see how you’d do it differently now). Once, we even had a woman who took this workshop because she wanted to break up with her boyfriend and needed to plan out what she wanted to say. True story.
Wait, this is a workshop about presentations, and it doesn’t involve slides?
That’s correct.
So if it’s not about slides, what are we learning?
We’ll let you in on a big secret: the best presentations figure out what they are trying to say before the ever enter into PowerPoint (or Keynote or Google Slides or anything else). And, the best presentations leverage story to resonate with their audience. We’ve seen that in business presentations, political campaigns, and societal movements. We’re willing to bet we will see that in your work, as well.
Do I need to be a designer?
Definitely not. If you are a designer, we recommend you check out our Resonate workshop and take a deep-dive into your storytelling skills.
Will there be breaks?
Sure will. You’ll have chances to check your email and stay in the loop. But, overall, we want you focused and engaged throughout the day so you can learn to tell better stories.

You don’t have to present at the end of class! This workshop is entirely about applying story to your presentation. No presenting necessary (though, shameless plug: we do have a great workshop on how to become a captivating presenter).
My presentations are really heavy in data. Are you telling me I should use story in those, too?
Actually, yes. The numbers themselves are less important than the story they collectively add up to. Maybe the numbers are combining to explain a market trend. Maybe they collectively show the story of why your company’s revenue took off when it did. There’s a story within all that data. This workshop will help you tell it.
