A presenter is standing in front of a training audience with a slide behind them. The slide title reads Duarte Big Idea™ with three columns below forming a basic arithmetic equation. The left side of the plus sign reads “Unique Point of View: what is your unique point of view on the topic?” while the right side of the plus sign reads “What’s at stake: What is at stake for those who do or do not adopt your point of view?” This is followed by an equal sign and the text “Duarte Big Idea™: Write it as a complete sentence. This is helping to illustrate that a Duarte Big idea™ combines your unique point of view and what’s stake into a complete sentence to clear understanding with your target audience.    Duarte Big Idea™ is a proprietary framework developed by Nancy Duarte. It has been a core component of Duarte workshops, courses, and training programs since 2009, with trademarked user.

Duarte Big Idea™

One sentence. Your entire presentation, solved.

You know the feeling. You have built a strong deck. You have the data. You have rehearsed. And somewhere in the room, fifteen minutes in, you can feel your audience starting to drift.

The problem is rarely the slides. It is that no one, including you, could say in a single sentence what the whole thing was actually about.

The Duarte Big Idea™ is the framework Duarte, Inc has taught in every workshop, course, and training program since 2009. It takes ten minutes to learn. It will change the way you prepare for every presentation you give after this one.

A competer screen opened to the Duarte home page with Post-It note stuck to the edge of the monitor. The Post-It notes read: “Could someone disagree with this? If yes, you have a Duarte Big Idea™. If not, it’s just a topic. Duarte Big Idea™ is a proprietary framework developed by Nancy Duarte. What is a Duarte Big Idea™?

It is one complete sentence. Not a title, not a topic, not a theme.

It is built from two ingredients:

Your unique point of view is what you believe. It is the specific, arguable stance your experience has earned you. If no one could disagree with it, it is a fact or a topic, not a point of view.

What’s at stake is why your audience should care right now. What do they gain if they act on your idea? What do they lose if they hold back? The stakes are what make a presentation worth sitting through.

Put those two things together in one complete sentence.

That is your Duarte Big Idea™.

Three rules to keep in mind:

1. It must express your unique point of view. Not what the data shows. Not what the room already believes. What you believe, based on your specific experience and perspective. Push past the obvious. The more distinct your point of view, the more worth listening to you become.

2. It must name what is at stake for your audience. The stakes answer the question your audience is asking in their head the moment you start: “Why does this matter to me, today?” Get specific. A concrete outcome lands harder than a vague consequence.

3. It must be a complete sentence. Not a title. Not a bullet. A grammatically whole sentence someone could agree or disagree with. If you can reduce it to two words on a slide title, you do not have a Big Idea yet. You have a subject.

A table of three boxes creating an x + y = z equation outlining The Duarte Big Idea™.   The left side of the plus sign reads: "Point of View, What is your particular view on the subject? What idea are you trying to convince people to adopt? What perspective are you trying to form?" The right side of the plus side reads: Stakes, What will happen if people accept your point of view and act upon it? What are the negative consequences of inaction?" Point of View plus Stake equals Duarte Big Idea™. The otherside of the equal sign reads: Duarte Big Idea™ Point of View + Stakes, Write the Duarte Big Idea™ in a complete sentence and make sure to include a verb.

What changes when you use The Duarte Big Idea

Preparation Gets Faster

When you know your Duarte Big Idea™ before you build anything, every decision becomes easier. Does this slide support the sentence? Does this story? Does this data point? Anything that does not belong becomes obvious and easy to cut. Most decks shrink by a third. Prep time follows.

Messages Land Cleanly

When your audience has one sentence to hold onto, everything else you say reinforces it. They leave knowing exactly what you wanted them to know, because you knew it first. The clarity you bring in is the clarity they take out.

Confidence Goes Up

Clarity is contagious. When you know precisely what you believe and precisely why it matters to the people in the room, your audience can feel it. They trust you more because of it. Presenters who do this work carry themselves differently.

Communication Improves

The Duarte Big Idea™ works for board presentations, sales pitches, project proposals, and the email asking for a budget approval. Once you have the sentence, your structure, talking points, and slides build from it naturally.
