Drive AI Adoption: 5 Stages to Overcome Resistance

Boosting AI Adoption Takes Empathetic Leadership

Despite AI’s ubiquity in tech stacks and media mentions, organizations are still struggling with effective AI adoption. Teams are hesitant to shake up their processes or resistant to changing old habits. Some even object on ethical grounds. In such a polarizing environment, how can leaders keep pace with AI-enabled competitors? Moreover, how can leaders convince reluctant workers to embrace AI in their day-to-day?

After two years of exploring the emerging AI ecosystem, Duarte CEO, Nancy Duarte, met these quandaries head-on while implementing her AI vision. This experience sparked a return to first principles of change communication from her 2016 book Illuminate™ and led to a revamped approach for the AI era.

5 Stages for Successful Change Communication

Illuminate™’s core stages of Dream, Leap, Fight, Climb, and Arrive remain key steppingstones for moving teams from their current way of working and into an AI future. However, Nancy is careful to note that every stage in the process requires regular touch points, empathetic listening, and anticipation on leadership’s part for how their teams might respond.

In the video, Nancy poses a few guiding questions to help orient leaders in their change communication strategy around AI adoption:

1. What part of their work would they really enjoy if AI took it off their plate?
2. What are they afraid AI might take away from them?
3. Where could using AI create problems for them or for customers?

Nancy notes that change is a process. And the larger the organization, the harder it is to transform. That’s why asking the right questions upfront and throughout a period of change can help build trust, cut through hesitancy, and move toward adoption with greater consensus.

What Leaders Can Do to Encourage AI Adoption

For Nancy, encouraging AI adoption starts with purposeful leadership. Simply mandating AI usage without thoughtful guidance and justification can feel haphazard or even coercive to skeptical workers. That’s why Nancy recommends that managers demonstrate desired behaviors, produce receipts that clearly show AI-derived progress, and remain clear-eyed about what is and isn’t working.

Organizations looking to move forward with AI adoption initiatives need to provide teams with ongoing leadership support, the right tools, and proper training to help nurture their curiosity and breakdown resistance. This helps give teams a seat at the table in AI implementation and the opportunity to shape usage that actually solves their pain points.

To help give AI adoption efforts an empathy-first approach, Nancy suggests clearly defining what AI use looks like in SOP documentation, naming objections before they gain traction, and treating resistance as a check-engine light for your AI vision.

Change is messy. But when it’s communicated with conviction, dedication, empathy, and patience, organizations can move forward around a shared belief. Without these components, inertia holds, and change withers on the vine.
