This type of slide shows a single word or short phrase in large type. Use it for the one message or idea you want to convey at that moment.
Sometimes we use a single word to set up a visual surprise on the next slide. Once at a high-tech company’s annual sales meeting, for instance, Nancy Duarte told a story about her first sales job: selling candy for the Camp Fire Girls as a kid. She had clipped a newspaper photo of her troop with a trophy for selling the most candy—but wanted that part to be a surprise. So first, she slipped in a slide that said, “Victory is sweet.” This text not only explained an important reason why people sell but also teed up the photo showing the goofy fifth-grade smiles and skinny arms holding up a trophy that was bigger than they were.
